FAQ
What is the superscript 2 called? The superscript 2 character ² (U+00B2) is officially named “Superscript Two” in Unicode. It’s also called “squared sign” and is the same character used for the squared mathematical notation (x²) and the square metre unit (m²).
Is ² the same as writing 2 in superscript with formatting? No — they look identical but are different things. ² is a specific Unicode character (U+00B2) that is always superscript regardless of what software displays it. “Formatted superscript” uses CSS or Word formatting to raise a regular 2 character — which only works in software that applies the formatting. Unicode ² copies and pastes as superscript everywhere, including plain text, social media, email, and WhatsApp.
Why doesn’t the letter q have a superscript version? Superscript letters in Unicode were added for specific linguistic and mathematical purposes, not as a complete decorative alphabet. The International Phonetic Alphabet and modifier letter standards drove which letters were included. Several letters were simply never added — q being the most notable gap. For complete superscript text, use the Small Text Generator which uses the closest available characters.
Do superscript characters work in Instagram and TikTok bios? Yes — Unicode superscript characters (² ³ ᵃ ᵇ ˢ etc.) work in Instagram bios, TikTok bios, Twitter/X profiles, Discord, and virtually any platform that supports Unicode text. They display as superscript on all devices without any formatting being applied.
What is the difference between superscript and subscript? Superscript characters are raised above the baseline (x², m²). Subscript characters are lowered below the baseline (H₂O, CO₂). Both are available as Unicode characters. See the full Superscript & Subscript complete guide for the full set of subscript characters.
